In a bid to rival SpaceX, Amazon has officially entered the space market by launching its first internet satellite.
Amazon launched its first 27 satellites from Florida, marking the formal beginning of its space-based internet initiative, Project Kuiper Broadband Internet where Elon Musk’s SpaceX currently holds dominance.
Project Kuiper is a major $10 billion project announced by Amazon in 2019. Through this initiative, Amazon aims to deliver satellite-based broadband internet to users, businesses and government entities around the world.
According to reports, Amazon plans to deploy over 3,200 satellites into orbit to provide fast and affordable internet globally.
While Amazon launched its satellites, SpaceX used a reusable fuel booster for the mission. SpaceX currently has over 7,000 Starlink satellites in orbit while European company OneWeb has several hundred satellites deployed even beyond that orbit.
