According to Indian media reports 77-year-old filmmaker Kuku Kohli passed away at a hospital in Mumbai on August 25. Aruna Irani was his second wife.

Following Kuku Kohli’s death, his relationship marriage and personal life with Aruna Irani have once again attracted public attention, with clips from the actress’s old interviews also going viral on social media.

Aruna Irani and Kuku Kohli got married in 1990. Kohli was already married and had children before marrying Aruna, who was his second wife. The couple reportedly lived in a separate home.

In one of her old interviews, Aruna Irani spoke candidly about why she decided not to have children after marriage, even though she had wanted to become a mother.

The actress explained that she came from a family in which her father had also been married twice. Because of her own experience, she understood the emotional and psychological impact such circumstances could have on a child.

She said she often wondered what she would tell her child if, while growing up, the child questioned her about his or her father. She feared that her child would have to go through considerable emotional pain.

Aruna also referred to actress Neena Gupta, who had a daughter, Masaba Gupta, with legendary cricketer Vivian Richards without being married to him and later raised her daughter as a single mother.

“Seeing Neena Gupta, I feel that it takes great courage but I did not have that courage,” Aruna said.

The actress clarified that her decision was not because she disliked children. Rather she wanted to protect a possible child from emotional difficulties that could arise from the circumstances surrounding her relationship.

Aruna said she was also troubled by the fact that Kuku Kohli was already married and had a family of his own. She feared that if her child wanted his father’s attention but the father could not always be present it could become extremely difficult for the child.

Reflecting on her relationship with Kuku Kohli Aruna said that sometimes people become emotionally involved in situations from which it is not easy to turn back.

She explained that loneliness can lead a person to develop an emotional attachment causing them to focus on the happiness of the present while overlooking possible pain in the future.

Aruna said she found happiness in her relationship with Kuku Kohli but ultimately chose not to have children after considering the future and the possible emotional impact on a child.

Kuku Kohli became widely known for directing the popular 1991 Bollywood film Phool Aur Kaante. He is survived by his wife Aruna Irani and two daughters, Pooja and Karishma from his first marriage.
