Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has urged Pakistani authorities to carry out a full and transparent investigation into the tragic death of a young Australian girl during a family holiday in Pakistan.

Nine-year-old Hania Ahmed was fatally shot on 10 June while travelling with her family in the city of Chakwal, located in Pakistan’s Punjab Province. According to police reports, the family was allegedly taken hostage by armed robbers who entered their rental vehicle at gunpoint. The incident quickly escalated into a dangerous confrontation involving law enforcement officers.

Authorities stated that police attempted to intervene after receiving information about the robbery. During the operation, the suspects reportedly opened fire on a police officer, triggering an exchange of gunfire. Police later explained that amid the confusion, an officer mistakenly believed the suspects were escaping in the family’s vehicle. Acting on that assumption, the officer fired his weapon. Tragically, the shots struck Hania, causing fatal injuries. Her father and older brother were also wounded during the incident.

Following the shooting, Punjab police announced that the officer involved had been taken into custody while an investigation is conducted. Officials maintained that the suspects had fired first, leading to the tense and rapidly developing situation. However, Hania’s father disputed , claiming that police officers fired before the suspects did. The conflicting versions of events have intensified calls for a thorough inquiry into what exactly occurred that day.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Prime Minister Albanese stressed the importance of accountability and transparency. He said the circumstances surrounding Hania’s death must be carefully examined so that the family, as well as the broader public, can understand how such a tragedy happened.

Albanese emphasized that Australia expects Pakistani authorities to conduct a proper and open investigation. He noted that transparency is essential not only for justice but also for maintaining public confidence in the investigative process. His comments reflected growing concern in Australia over the incident and the need for clear answers regarding the actions of both the suspects and the police.

In response, Punjab police stated that there was “absolutely no justification for deviating from established protocols” and pledged to carry out a comprehensive and impartial investigation. Authorities said all aspects of the case would be reviewed to determine responsibility and ensure accountability where necessary.

The death of Hania has deeply affected communities in both Australia and Pakistan. At Australian Islamic College in Perth, where she was a student, staff and classmates have been struggling to cope with the loss.

School principal Abdullah Khan described the news as devastating and traumatic for the school community. He remembered Hania as a cheerful, friendly, and sociable child who was respected by teachers and admired by fellow students. According to Khan, she had many friends and brought positivity to those around her.

The school has remained in contact with Hania’s family and is providing counselling and emotional support to students and staff. Khan said that many children, especially those in Hania’s class, are experiencing shock and sadness as they come to terms with the tragedy. Meanwhile, the Australian government continues to provide consular assistance to the family as investigations proceed.
