He was a dervish-like soul who never wielded his power against the public, nor did he ever cause distress to a single soul in need. Holding a kingdom yet living the life of an ascetic, he was a ruler whose passing has left his family and the entirety of Khairpur weeping inconsolably in deep grief. Some separations are unforgettable, leaving wounds that time can never heal. The last ruler of the Khairpur State, His Highness Mir Ali Murad Khan Talpur, has bidden us a final farewell at the age of 93.
His Highness Mir Ali Murad, whom his people fondly called Mir Sahib, spent his entire life immersed in religious gatherings (Majalis), mourning (Azadari), and the remembrance (Zikr) of the Household of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Other than this sacred remembrance, no words ever crossed his lips. His passing on October 5, 2026, struck the residents of Khairpur like a bolt of lightning; the mere mention of the news filled every eye with tears. And why shouldn’t eyes weep? He was a protective shelter and a guiding shadow for the people of Khairpur. A benefactor to the poor, he never left his people alone in times of trouble. This is precisely why the entire region is now cloaked in deep mourning.

We often observe that when individuals gain even a shred of power, they turn tyrannical, making life miserable for ordinary people. Yet he was a rare ruler in this world, of whom the public had absolutely no fear; instead, people lived with a constant, heartfelt desire to meet him. He spent his whole life in simple attire, raising his voice amid the echoes of “Ya Hussain, Ya Hussain.” Even in the final chapters of his life, Mir Sahib would personally carry the sacred emblem (Alam Pak) and participate in the mourning procession. Having dedicated himself to promoting the tradition of Azadari in Khairpur, he is undoubtedly in the blessed company of the Household of the Prophet (PBUH) today.

In my entire life, I never once saw Mir Sahib speak with his head held high in arrogance. Looking at him, one could never guess that this man had once been the sovereign ruler of the Khairpur State, so humble was the life he led. We, the people of Khairpur, were deeply fortunate to be blessed with such a noble ruler, and today the world remembers him in the highest regard. Bearing the immense weight of the state on his shoulders at such a young age and managing it so magnificently was no ordinary feat. Under his rule, Khairpur was a welfare state where education and healthcare were entirely free, the public faced no heavy taxation, and the city housed numerous factories where thousands of unemployed citizens found livelihood to feed their families. What greater peace and contentment could there be? All of this was the fruit of Mir Sahib’s profound sincerity. Sadly, with the passage of time, these comforts were stripped away from Khairpur, a lingering pain that continued to grieve both Mir Sahib and his people.

Though the historical glory of Khairpur faded long ago, its people still found a sense of security in Mir Sahib’s presence alone, feeling that they still had a guardian looking over them. No one lives forever in this world, but an extraordinary character lives on eternally. The gathering of thousands at his funeral, weeping and sobbing in profound grief, was a testament to the fact that his people feel completely orphaned today. The town of Kot Diji shut down completely out of respect; the entire city of Khairpur, too, should have closed in mourning, because its people will never find such a peace-loving ruler again. People from all walks of life have termed the passing of His Highness Mir Ali Murad a monumental historical loss, a void that can never be filled. Today, Mir Sahib rests peacefully in the lap of Mother Earth near his home in Kot Diji, but the people of Khairpur will remain restless in his absence for a lifetime.
