BRICS security meeting brings India, China and Iran together amid regional tensions

The meeting comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East continue to shape international diplomacy and influence relations among major global powers.

India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held talks with Ghadir Nezamipour, a senior official from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. According to India’s foreign ministry, the two leaders discussed the latest developments in the Middle East along with broader issues concerning relations between New Delhi and Tehran. The meeting reflected India’s continued efforts to maintain strong ties with Iran while carefully balancing its partnership with the United States.

India has traditionally enjoyed friendly relations with Iran, particularly in areas related to trade and energy. However, recent conflict involving the United States and Iran has complicated that relationship. As one of the world’s largest energy importers, India was directly affected by disruptions to fuel supplies during the conflict, making regional stability an important priority for New Delhi.

On the sidelines of the BRICS meeting, Iranian officials also met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. According to Iran’s embassy, the two sides discussed the implementation of the recently announced peace agreement and exchanged views on the next phase of diplomatic efforts. Iranian officials also thanked China for its political backing during the recent period of regional tension.

China reaffirmed its support for Iran during the meeting. According to a statement from Beijing, Wang said China supports Iran’s efforts to protect its sovereignty, national security and independence. He also welcomed the continuation of talks between Tehran and Washington, describing dialogue as an important step toward maintaining peace and reducing tensions across the region.

Wang further said China is prepared to strengthen cooperation with Iran through regular high level exchanges and closer political coordination. He expressed confidence that stronger bilateral ties would contribute to long term stability and deeper cooperation between the two countries in different sectors.

The BRICS gathering also brought together representatives from Russia, Brazil and South Africa. Indian officials said the discussions were focused on non traditional security challenges that are becoming increasingly important in today’s world. Topics included cyber threats, technological risks and the impact of new technologies on national and international security.

The meeting highlighted the growing role of BRICS as a platform for discussing global political and security issues beyond economic cooperation. As international conflicts become more complex, member countries are placing greater emphasis on cooperation in areas related to defence, technology and regional stability.

The event also provided another opportunity for India and China to continue improving their diplomatic engagement. Relations between the two Asian powers have gradually recovered since the deadly military clash along their disputed Himalayan border in 2020. Although differences remain, both sides have increased dialogue over the past year in an effort to reduce tensions and improve communication.

With multiple global crises unfolding at the same time, the BRICS meeting offered participating countries an opportunity to exchange views on common security concerns and strengthen diplomatic coordination. Officials believe continued dialogue among major regional powers will remain essential for addressing future challenges and maintaining stability across Asia and the wider international community.
