Broadband internet restored across AJK after 99 days

Broadband internet services have been restored across Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after a prolonged suspension of 99 days, providing relief to residents who had struggled with limited connectivity for more than three months.

The restoration took effect at midnight on Sunday, while DSL services have also resumed in the region. However, 3G and 4G mobile internet services will remain suspended for several more days.

The return of fixed-line internet is expected to benefit students, businesses, journalists, freelancers, professionals and households that depend on reliable online access for education, work and daily activities. Residents and members of the business community welcomed the move, describing it as an important step towards restoring normal life.

Despite the restoration of broadband and DSL connectivity, people who rely solely on mobile data will continue to face difficulties until 3G and 4G services are reinstated.

The development follows recent directions from the AJK High Court for the restoration of internet services. Justice Shahid Bahar had directed the authorities to restore connectivity within 10 days while allowing exemptions for areas where security and law-and-order conditions prevented an immediate resumption.

The prolonged disruption had affected a wide range of activities across the region, including education, digital payments, business operations, government work and professional services.

Internet services were initially suspended on June 5 following protests and a sit-in announced by the Joint Awami Action Committee in Rawalakot. Services were partially restored after several weeks but were again disrupted in Muzaffarabad following further protests and clashes.

On August 31, AJK Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani announced steps to partially restore connectivity in several districts. DSL services subsequently resumed in areas including Mirpur, Neelum and Haveli, while full connectivity remained unavailable in Muzaffarabad.

The extended internet shutdown had particularly affected students and traders relying on digital transactions. Freelancers and government employees also reported difficulties carrying out routine professional responsibilities without stable internet access.
