On Friday, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) denied the request of the Additional Attorney General to dismiss the petition filed for the recovery of poet and journalist Ahmed Farhad. The case was heard by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, following a petition from Farhad’s wife, Urooj Zainab.
The court session saw the presence of the petitioner’s legal representatives, Iman Mazari and Hadi Ali Advocate, alongside the government’s Additional Attorney General Munawar Iqbal.
During the proceedings, Additional Attorney General Munawar informed the court that Farhad was currently under physical remand until June 2 and had been allowed to meet with his family, suggesting that the habeas corpus petition should therefore be dismissed.
However, Mazari argued, “We did not only ask for his return, but we also demanded that action be taken against those responsible for his enforced disappearance.”
Justice Kayani rejected the Additional Attorney General’s request, stating that the case would only be resolved when Ahmed Farhad personally appears in court. “The day Ahmed Farhad comes to the court, the petition will be disposed of,” he stated.
Subsequently, the court adjourned the hearing until June 7.
