A recent study has challenged common perceptions about collagen supplements and revealed important findings. A comprehensive review of previous trials found that long-term use of collagen supplements can help improve skin health, increasing skin elasticity and hydration while also reducing symptoms of arthritis.
The new research indicates that these supplements are not just useful for superficial cosmetic benefits but also act as factors in the repair of deeper tissues. However, the study also noted that collagen supplementation does not significantly affect skin roughness.
For this study, researchers from a British university reviewed 16 reviews and 113 clinical trials including approximately 8,000 participants.
Scientists suggest that medical professionals should consider collagen supplements as an effective adjunct therapy for aging skin especially for patients in post-menopausal stages or for those whose skin has been damaged by sun exposure particularly when traditional treatments are unsuitable or expensive.
The research also found that collagen supplements are consistently associated with a reduction in arthritis symptoms such as joint stiffness and pain and have been linked to improvements in muscle health.
What is collagen?
Collagen is a protein naturally found in the human body. It plays a fundamental role in strengthening skin, nails, bones and connective tissues. As people age, the body’s collagen production decreases which can lead to wrinkles on the skin and discomfort from conditions like arthritis.
