The expert also shared a simple method for removing built up ice. They heated some water, placed it in a container inside the freezer and left it there for around 10 minutes.

The ice then became easier to remove.

However the claim that a 2mm layer of ice increases electricity use by 20 percent came from the zero waste expert and should not be treated as a fixed scientific rule for every refrigerator.
