Collective action needed against terrorism

Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, delivered an important message at the meeting of interior ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Bishkek. His speech highlighted a reality that many countries face today: terrorism, organised crime, cybercrime, and drug trafficking do not stop at national borders. These threats are connected and require countries to work together instead of acting alone. Naqvi was right to stress the importance of the “Shanghai spirit,” which is based on cooperation, mutual trust, and shared responsibility. Terrorist groups and criminal networks are becoming more sophisticated. They now use modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and cryptocurrencies to spread their influence, recruit supporters, move money, and plan attacks. This makes the fight against terrorism more challenging than ever before. Pakistan’s call for stronger intelligence sharing and better coordination among SCO member states deserves full support. No country can effectively defeat terrorism if information remains isolated within borders. Sharing intelligence, conducting joint threat assessments, and strengthening cyber capabilities can help prevent attacks before they occur. Naqvi’s emphasis on digital forensics and cyber intelligence reflects a practical understanding of modern security challenges. Pakistan’s position also carries moral weight because the country has paid a heavy price in the fight against terrorism. Thousands of Pakistani civilians, security personnel, and law-enforcement officers have lost their lives over the years. Despite these sacrifices, Pakistan has continued to strengthen its counterterrorism efforts through reforms, improved border management, anti-money laundering measures, and enhanced intelligence coordination. These steps demonstrate a serious commitment to regional and international security.

Equally important is Pakistan’s focus on combating narcotics trafficking and terror financing. Drug trafficking networks often provide funds that enable extremist groups to operate. Stopping these financial flows requires close cooperation among neighbouring states and international partners. The international community should recognise Pakistan’s contributions and support its efforts. Terrorism is not only Pakistan’s problem; it is a global threat that affects peace, development, and human security everywhere. By working with Pakistan and supporting regional cooperation through the SCO, countries can help build a safer future for all. As Naqvi rightly stated, common challenges require common solutions.
