Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to highlight the important issue of cousin marriages. Cousin marriages have been part of many cultures and communities for generations and are still common in Pakistan. Families often prefer such marriages because the two people already know each other, family relationships are closer, and parents may feel more comfortable with a relative becoming part of the family.
However, while this tradition may have social advantages, repeated marriages between close relatives can increase the risk of inherited genetic disorders in children. This does not mean that every child born to cousins will have a health problem, but medical research shows that the risk of certain inherited conditions can be higher, especially when cousin marriages occur repeatedly across several generations. Some children may face serious health challenges, developmental problems, or inherited disorders.
The purpose of discussing this issue is not to attack any family, culture, or tradition. Instead, it is to encourage awareness and informed decision-making. Before marriage, families should consider medical and genetic counselling, particularly when there is a history of inherited illness in the family. People should understand both the possible social benefits and the health risks rather than following a tradition without sufficient knowledge.
Marriage is an important decision, and the health of future generations should also be considered. Education, medical awareness and proper counselling can help families make responsible choices. Our traditions deserve respect, but awareness is equally important when the health and future of children may be involved.
