Ex-Zimbabwe cricketer Guy Whittall attacked by leopard

Former Zimbabwean cricketer Guy Whittall faced a terrifying ordeal when he was attacked by a leopard while trekking in a conservancy in the Humani region.

The ex-all-rounder, known for his significant contributions to Zimbabwe’s cricketing history, suffered serious injuries in the incident and underwent emergency surgery at Milton Park Hospital in Harare.

Whittall, who represented Zimbabwe in 46 Tests and 147 ODIs from 1993 to 2003, was accompanied by his loyal dog, Chikara, during the trek. Both Whittall and Chikara sustained injuries during the encounter, with the brave dog attempting to intervene to protect his owner.

This incident adds to Whittall’s previous encounters with wildlife, including a frightening incident 11 years ago when he found an eight-foot Nile crocodile under his bed.

Now, he faces the aftermath of a vicious leopard attack, requiring urgent medical attention.

Hannah Stooks-Whittall, Guy Whittall’s wife, provided updates on his condition via social media, expressing gratitude for the prompt response of medical personnel and the support from well-wishers.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Stooks-Whittall highlighted the resilience and bravery shown by both her husband and their loyal dog.

Whittall’s cricketing career is notable for achievements such as a memorable century in 1995 that helped Zimbabwe secure their first-ever victory against Pakistan.

While his accomplishments on the cricket field are celebrated, Whittall’s recent encounter with wildlife underscores the unpredictable nature of the wild and the courage needed to face its challenges.
