During the first half, the Dutch players appeared more alert and created several scoring opportunities. However, neither team managed to find the back of the net before halftime. The second half was much more lively with both teams launching repeated attacks on each other’s goal.
In the 51st minute, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored the opening goal of the match with a header from a well-delivered cross by Ryan Gravenberch giving the Netherlands a 1-0 lead.
Japan responded quickly and refused to let the Dutch maintain their advantage for long. Just six minutes later, Keito Nakamura fired a powerful shot into the net to level the score at 1-1.
