Karachi – With only six days remaining until the start of the FIFA World Cup, many fans are curious about the value of the tournament’s iconic trophy. The world’s most popular football tournament, the FIFA World Cup 2026 will begin on June 11 and will be jointly hosted by United States, Mexico and Canada. It will be the largest World Cup in history.
A total of 48 teams will compete for a single trophy and after 104 matches, one team will lift football’s most prestigious prize. But how much is the trophy actually worth? The FIFA World Cup trophy stands 37 centimeters tall and weighs approximately 6 kilograms. It is made from 18-carat gold.
According to reports, based on current global gold prices, the trophy’s material value is estimated at around US$250,000 which is roughly 70 million Pakistani rupees. The trophy’s design features two human figures holding up the Earth. It was created in 1970 by Italian sculptor Silvio Gazzaniga.
The lower section of the trophy also contains two layers of a green mineral stone known as malachite. Experts believe that if the trophy were ever auctioned, its historical significance, rarity and craftsmanship could push its value beyond US$20 million.
Does FIFA give original trophy to winners?
The answer is quite interesting. The governing body of world football, FIFA does not award the original trophy to the World Cup-winning team. Instead, the champions receive a gold-plated bronze replica while the original trophy remains in FIFA’s possession for safekeeping.
