Former UK Minister Ann Widdecombe killed, man arrested

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after the death of former British minister and Reform UK spokeswoman Ann Widdecombe.

Police said the suspect, a white British male, is currently in custody as detectives continue their investigation into the death of the 78-year-old politician.

Widdecombe was found with serious injuries at her home in Devon on Thursday. Authorities confirmed that her death is being treated as a murder case.

Investigators said the incident is not being considered a terrorist attack. Police also stated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the killing was politically motivated.

The suspect was arrested on Friday afternoon from an address in Newton Abbot. Officials said the investigation remains at an early stage and officers are examining all possible aspects of the case.

Police have appealed to the public to share any relevant information, including photographs, videos or details that could assist the investigation. A special information portal has been opened to collect evidence from members of the public.

Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman said officers are continuing house-to-house inquiries and reviewing CCTV footage as part of the investigation. He urged people not to spread speculation on social media while the case is ongoing.

The death of Widdecombe has caused shock across the UK political community. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as deeply disturbing and expressed condolences to her family and friends.

Starmer said the priority was supporting the police investigation and ensuring that anyone with information comes forward.

Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch also expressed shock over the incident, describing Widdecombe as a strong, outspoken and dedicated public figure.

Widdecombe served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Maidstone for more than two decades before later joining Reform UK as a spokeswoman. She remained a well-known figure in British politics and television.

Her former Strictly Come Dancing partner Anton Du Beke paid tribute to her, remembering her as a positive, energetic and supportive person.

Residents near Widdecombe’s Devon home said they were shocked and saddened by the news. Neighbours described her as a friendly and approachable woman who kept close ties with the local community.
