France announces closure of Karachi consulate due to budgetary constraints

France has announced the permanent closure of its diplomatic mission in Karachi, citing purely budgetary reasons. French Consul General Alexis Chahtahtinsky made the emotional announcement during a ceremony celebrating France’s National Day (Bastille Day) at a local hotel.

The Consul General emphasised that the decision is part of a broader global effort by the French government to streamline and lean down its foreign presence. However, he firmly assured attendees that “France is not leaving Pakistan”,  explaining that the bilateral relationship will continue to be deepened primarily through the French Embassy in Islamabad.

Despite the formal closure of the consulate, the French presence in Karachi will be sustained.

The newly appointed Honorary Consul General will perform essential consular duties and remain in touch with provincial authorities.

The Pakistan France Business Alliance (PFBA) will continue actively promoting trade and business.

Cultural and educational outreach will continue via the Alliance Française de Karachi and a permanent Campus France representative.
