The people of Gilgit-Baltistan will head to the polls today in an important election that will shape the future of the region for years to come. With hundreds of candidates contesting 24 general seats, voters have a chance to choose leaders who can address the real problems facing their communities. For many residents, the issues are clear. They want reliable electricity, clean drinking water, better roads, quality education, more jobs, and stronger tourism infrastructure. These are not complicated demands. They are basic necessities that citizens deserve. Despite Gilgit-Baltistan’s natural beauty, strategic importance, and growing tourism industry, many people continue to struggle with shortages of essential services. The election is also important because it offers voters an opportunity to raise their voices on the region’s constitutional and political future. Many residents believe they should enjoy greater political rights and a stronger place in Pakistan’s national framework. Their concerns deserve to be heard respectfully and addressed seriously.
The Election Commission has promised free, fair, and impartial elections. This commitment must be honoured not only on polling day but throughout the entire electoral process. Democracy is strongest when every candidate can campaign freely, every voter can vote without fear, and every result reflects the genuine will of the people. This is where a little tongue-in-cheek observation may be appropriate. Pakistani governments often praise democracy with great enthusiasm, usually right before explaining why some political opponents should have a slightly harder time participating in it. Critics of the government have argued that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has faced obstacles that have limited its ability to compete on an equal footing. Whether one supports PTI, opposes it, or remains undecided, democracy works best when all major political forces are allowed a fair chance to present their case to voters. The people of Gilgit-Baltistan deserve an election that is peaceful, transparent, and credible. The real winners should not be political parties but democratic values. A fair contest will strengthen public trust and ensure that whoever forms the next government does so with a genuine mandate from the people. That is the foundation of lasting progress and stability.
