- Is it simply because people love to revisit old romances, or does her reluctance to discuss the past tell us something about how difficult it can be to leave certain experiences behind?
- Refusing to discuss a former relationship does not prove that someone has failed to move on.
- We often assume that a person who has moved on should be able to discuss an old relationship casually.
I have been a great fan of Aishwarya Rai. Even today, I enjoy watching her old films. There is something about her screen presence that keeps a viewer interested long after the story has ended. She has beauty, grace and a quiet confidence that made her one of Bollywood’s most admired actresses. Yet, beyond the glamour of cinema, there is a chapter of her life that continues to attract public attention: her relationship with Salman Khan.
I sometimes wonder why a story that ended more than two decades ago still follows her wherever she goes. Is it simply because people love to revisit old romances, or does her reluctance to discuss the past tell us something about how difficult it can be to leave certain experiences behind?
In a 2012 interview on Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Aishwarya was asked about her separation from Salman. She did not want to discuss it publicly. Her response was firm, but it was also thoughtful. She explained that the matter belonged to her past and that she had no desire to reopen it on a public platform.
She said she had moved beyond the inner conflict and wanted to leave the past where it belonged. For her, the decision not to speak was not simply about herself. It was also about her family, her loved ones and the feelings of other people connected to the story.
I understand that argument. Fame does not make anyone less human. A famous actress may appear on television screens and magazine covers, but she still has a private life. She has memories she may not wish to share, relationships she may want to protect and feelings that do not belong to the public.
Yet, as a fan, I find myself asking another question: if a person has truly moved on, does the subject still need such a firm boundary?
In ordinary life, the passage of time often changes the way we remember a romance. A crush that once seemed impossible to forget gradually loses its power. The excitement fades, emotions settle and life introduces new people, responsibilities and experiences. Eventually, we can speak about an old relationship without feeling that we are returning to the moment when everything fell apart.
That is what moving on often looks like. It does not mean forgetting a person or pretending that the relationship never mattered. It means accepting that the story is over and allowing it to become just another part of life.
But I must be careful here. Refusing to discuss a former relationship does not prove that someone has failed to move on. Silence can be a sign of pain, but it can also be a deliberate choice to protect one’s privacy. Only Aishwarya knows what the experience means to her today.
The relationship reportedly developed around the time they worked together in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, released in 1999. Their separation became public knowledge in the early 2000s. Aishwarya later married Abhishek Bachchan in April 2007, and they have a daughter, Aaradhya.
For me, this is where the story becomes more interesting than celebrity gossip. It raises a question about how we understand emotional closure. We often assume that a person who has moved on should be able to discuss an old relationship casually. But people heal differently. Some can laugh about their past, while others prefer not to revisit it at all.
I still love watching Aishwarya’s old films. Her performances belong to an era of Bollywood that many fans remember with affection. Her personal life, however, is not another film in which the audience has a right to demand an ending that satisfies its curiosity.
Perhaps she has moved on completely. Perhaps the experience remains a painful memory. Her 2012 interview does not give us enough evidence to decide.
What it does tell me is that even a celebrated star can draw a line between the life she shares with the world and the life she keeps for herself.
