India’s second phase of general elections sees high stakes, intensifying campaigns

India conducted its second phase of voting in the massive general elections, with nearly one billion eligible voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a third consecutive term, emphasizing his economic policies, welfare initiatives, nationalistic agenda, and personal popularity. His opponents, comprising a coalition of over two dozen parties, are advocating for increased affirmative action, more government aid, and an end to what they perceive as Modi’s authoritarian leadership.

A total of 88 parliamentary seats out of 543 were up for grabs in this phase, with voter turnout at 39% midway through the process. Campaigning intensified, especially regarding communal issues, with Modi accusing the opposition, particularly Congress, of favoring minorities and intending to impose an inheritance tax. Congress refuted these allegations, claiming Modi was diverting attention from pressing issues like unemployment and rural distress.

Despite some dissenting voices, many voters expressed support for the BJP, citing concerns about communal politics. However, others voiced unease over the increasing religious polarization in the political landscape.

Rahul Gandhi, a prominent figure in the Congress party, was among the candidates contesting in this phase. He highlighted the significance of the election, accusing the ruling party of undermining democratic principles. Gandhi faces competition in his bid for re-election from Wayanad in Kerala.

The Congress party, which suffered significant losses in previous elections, aims for a better performance this time, particularly in states like Karnataka. However, internal conflicts and corruption allegations have weakened its national standing.

Despite calls for changes in the voting process, the Supreme Court declined to intervene, maintaining the status quo.
