Israel strikes Syria again

The latest Israeli drone strike near Damascus should serve as another warning to the world: condemnations alone are clearly not stopping the violence.

Several people were reportedly injured when an Israeli drone struck a civilian vehicle near a village southwest of the Syrian capital. The attack came only days after another Israeli operation in Syria, showing that Israel appears least bothered by the condemnations that followed its earlier actions.

Kuwait has strongly condemned the latest strike and called on the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to take action. Its demand is justified. Every country has a right to defend its sovereignty, and repeated military operations on the territory of another state raise serious questions about international law and the authority of global institutions.

The larger problem is the growing gap between words and action. The Muslim world has repeatedly condemned Israeli attacks on Syria, but these statements have done little to prevent further strikes. The latest attack makes that painfully clear. Strong speeches and press releases may express anger, but they offer little protection to civilians when military operations continue.

The international community must therefore move beyond routine condemnation. The UN Security Council and major world powers should work to prevent further escalation, protect civilians and ensure that all parties respect international law.

Syria has already suffered years of conflict and destruction. It cannot afford to become the battlefield for another prolonged regional confrontation. Every new strike increases the risk of retaliation and a wider conflict that could affect the entire Middle East.
