Jawaharlal Nehru University upholds freedom of choice, hijab recognized as fundamental right

Dr. Shri Shanti Pandit, the Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, has unequivocally stated that no educational institution should enforce a particular dress code, affirming that the decision to wear a hijab is a matter of personal choice.

In an interview with the Press Trust of India, Dr. Shanti Pandit emphasized the importance of respecting diversity in India, highlighting that uniformity cannot be imposed, whether in matters of religion, language, or attire. He emphasized the institution’s commitment to fostering an environment where students can freely express themselves and make choices regarding their clothing and dietary preferences based on their religious teachings and traditions.

Dr. Shanti Pandit underscored the principle of mutual respect, emphasizing the need for individuals to honor each other’s language, attire, festivals, rituals, customs, and religious beliefs. He emphasized that educational institutions should serve as platforms for open dialogue and expression, ensuring that every individual feels empowered to voice their opinions without fear of discrimination.

Jawaharlal Nehru University has long been regarded as a bastion of secularism and equality in India, steadfastly resisting pressures from extremist factions.
