Katie Zacharia has spoken publicly after her brief stint as White House press secretary came to an end within days of her first appearance at the podium.
Zacharia made her debut on October 13, delivering a press briefing that lasted more than 15 minutes. However, her performance attracted attention after she appeared nervous, paused frequently and answered only three questions.
Her appearance also sparked criticism on social media. Viewers pointed to her reliance on notes, hesitant delivery and several verbal slips during the briefing.
One moment that drew particular attention came when Zacharia was asked how she would balance her professional responsibilities with raising her four children. While discussing her husband, she mistakenly referred to him as the president before correcting herself.
Questions were also raised about her professional credentials. Although she had been introduced as an attorney by President Donald Trump and other officials, Zacharia said during the briefing that she had passed the bar exam “when I was in China.” Following scrutiny over the statement, she acknowledged that she had not passed the bar exam.
Her performance reportedly drew criticism beyond social media, with members of the Trump administration also expressing concerns.
On Friday, Trump said he had encouraged Zacharia to reconsider the position, citing the pressures associated with the job.
“I told her: ‘I think you’re better off being happy, and I’m not sure you can ever be happy in this stuff.’ There’s nothing easy about this stuff,” Trump told reporters.
A White House official subsequently confirmed that Zacharia was stepping down from the role.
Following the developments, Zacharia took to X to express her appreciation for Trump and his work. She described the president as kind, thoughtful, hardworking and dedicated to the American people.
“President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to,” she wrote.
“It was an honor to work for him,” she added.
Zacharia had succeeded Karoline Leavitt as the 37th White House press secretary under Trump. Her departure after only a few days has drawn comparisons with other short-lived appointments during Trump’s presidency, including Anthony Scaramucci, whose tenure as White House communications director lasted just 10 days in 2017.
