Lionel Richie has postponed two upcoming shows in Chicago and Columbus after falling ill during a performance earlier this week.
During the opening night of his tour with Earth, Wind and Fire on June 24 at Grand Casino Arena in St Paul, Minnesota, Richie was forced to cut his concert short due to ill health. Fan footage showed him sitting down during his performance of Dancing on the Ceiling, the ninth song in his setlist, telling the audience that when you are feeling dizzy, you sit down. He remained seated through the following track, Three Times a Lady, before calling for an intermission and leaving the stage. His bandmates exited about fifteen minutes later, with saxophonist Dino Soldo addressing the crowd to apologise for the inconvenience caused to fans holding tickets for the remaining shows.
It was later reported that Richie was met by paramedics backstage and taken to hospital by ambulance as a precaution.
Organisers have now confirmed that his performances scheduled for June 26 in Chicago and June 27 in Columbus will not go ahead as planned. In a statement, they said Richie has been advised by doctors to rest and return to full health before performing again, adding that he and Earth, Wind and Fire will return to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh. The statement noted that Richie is heartbroken to postpone the two shows and is eager to get back to performing for his fans, while again apologising for the inconvenience to ticket holders.
No rescheduled dates for the postponed shows have been announced yet, though organisers have said new dates will be confirmed soon.
