Morocco survived a spirited challenge from Haiti to secure a dramatic 4-2 victory in their final Group C match of the FIFA World Cup 2026, booking a place in the knockout stage and ending Haiti’s hopes of making history on the global stage.
The entertaining contest in Atlanta had everything football fans could ask for—early goals, stunning strikes, dramatic momentum swings, and late controversy. While Morocco celebrated qualification, Haiti left the tournament without a point but with its reputation significantly enhanced.
Ranked 83rd in the world, Haiti stunned the crowd by taking the lead after just 10 minutes. A dangerous attacking move resulted in a fortunate goal when the ball deflected off Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and into the net, giving the underdogs a dream start.
Morocco responded with determination and eventually found an equalizer in the 39th minute through star defender Achraf Hakimi. However, Haiti refused to back down.
Just before halftime, Wilson Isidor produced one of the tournament’s most memorable moments, unleashing a spectacular long-range effort from 25 yards that flew into the net and restored Haiti’s lead. The stunning strike immediately became a contender for one of the best goals of the World Cup.
Yet Morocco struck back once again before the break. Ismael Saibari scored deep into first-half stoppage time, leveling the score at 2-2 and shifting momentum back toward the African side.
The second half saw Haiti’s goalkeeper Johnny Placide make a series of impressive saves to keep his team in contention. However, Morocco’s pressure eventually paid off in the 78th minute when substitute Soufiane Rahimi forced an own goal after his shot deflected off defender Ricardo Adé and into the net.
As Haiti pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Morocco delivered the final blow. Yassine Kechta added a fourth goal in the closing stages, with VAR confirming the goal after a lengthy review.
The victory secured second place in Group C for Morocco behind Brazil, setting up a knockout-round clash against either the Netherlands, Japan, or Sweden.
Although Haiti’s World Cup journey ended in disappointment, the Caribbean side earned admiration worldwide for its fearless performances and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.
