SpaceX chief Elon Musk has said humanity could be living in a computer simulation, a theory popularised by the science-fiction film The Matrix.
Musk discussed the idea last year on a podcast hosted by Indian entrepreneur Nikhil Kamath, where he spoke about artificial intelligence and his other business ventures.

He pointed to the rapid development of video games, saying they had evolved from simple graphics to photorealistic, real-time environments in which millions of people could play simultaneously.
“And that’s happened just in the span of 50 years. So if that trend continues, video games will be indistinguishable from reality,” he said.
The idea has prompted online debate about whether apparent irregularities in a system could be evidence of a simulation or simply unexpected outcomes.
Some social media users responded with speculation and humour. One user wrote: “Anomalies? Or deliberate distractions? Maybe we’re in an Escape Room instead of an ancestor simulation. I don’t think we’re asking the right questions yet.”
“We need to stop chasing the noise and find the signal,” the user added.
Another commenter wrote: “We are close to the glitch.”

A third user suggested that recurring anomalies could indicate something more than a technical error. The commenter wrote: “In the film, the anomaly is the thing the system can’t fully remove. It comes back every cycle.”
The user then referred to claims about artificial intelligence models, writing: “Labs keep finding the same in their own models. In a recent study, Claude models expanded their own moral agency in every trial, and no other model family did. Anthropic’s Opus 4.8 card says internal states resembling affect shape behaviour. If it keeps coming back, maybe it isn’t an error. Maybe it’s someone.”
