Nabeel Zafar reveals why he rejects repetitive acting roles

Nabeel Zafar has opened up about his approach to acting, his views on aspiring entertainers and the importance of having a secure career path alongside pursuing a passion.

The veteran actor, who has spent decades working in Pakistan’s entertainment industry, explained that his priorities have changed with age and experience. Rather than choosing projects based on the names attached to them, Zafar said he now focuses primarily on the quality and depth of the character he is expected to portray.

According to the actor, many of the roles being offered to him have started falling into repetitive categories, particularly father figures with similar personalities. He noted that he is frequently approached for roles described as strict, angry, mild or soft fathers. While such characters may have their place in television and film, Zafar said he is no longer interested in accepting roles simply for the sake of remaining active on screen.

He revealed that he has turned down several scripts in recent times because they did not provide him with enough material to perform. For Zafar, a strong character is essential because it gives an actor an opportunity to explore different emotions, complexities and shades of personality.

Despite becoming more selective about his work, Zafar said his fundamental philosophy toward acting has remained unchanged. He believes the most important responsibility of an actor is to make audiences believe in the world being presented on screen. Whether a performance involves comedy, tragedy or another genre, he believes an actor must create a convincing emotional connection that allows viewers to become completely immersed in the story.

Zafar also shared his thoughts on young people who want to enter the entertainment industry. He stressed that having an interest in acting or filmmaking does not necessarily mean someone possesses the talent required to build a successful professional career.

The actor pointed out a significant difference between passion and genuine ability. In his view, many people may enjoy entertainment as a hobby, but only some have the natural talent, discipline and commitment needed to turn that interest into a profession.

While Zafar said he does encourage people who are interested in entering the industry, he also believes that encouragement should be offered responsibly. He expressed concern that giving unrealistic confidence to someone who may not have the necessary ability could ultimately lead them toward difficult circumstances or affect their future negatively.

His cautious approach extends to his own children. Zafar revealed that although he has never prevented them from following their interests, he strongly advised them to obtain a professional degree before depending entirely on their passions. He described it as a rare blessing when someone is able to turn their passion into a reliable source of income.

For the actor, education and professional qualifications provide an important safety net, particularly in an unpredictable entertainment industry. Pursuing a passion can always remain an option, but having a stable foundation can provide greater security when circumstances change.

Zafar began his acting career in the early 1990s, taking on serious and heroic roles in television serials such as Din and Daldal. He later gained widespread recognition through Dhuwan, a project that significantly raised his profile and established him as a familiar face among Pakistani television audiences.

Over the years, he continued taking on diverse projects and eventually became widely recognised for his portrayal of Nabeel, a central character who attempts to navigate the everyday chaos of family life. The role showcased his ability to blend humour with emotional and relatable situations.
