Bangladesh have appointed experienced left-arm spinner Nahida Akter as their new women’s T20I captain for a one-year term, with middle-order batter Sobhana Mostary named vice-captain.
The 25-year-old will begin her leadership tenure at the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy 2026 next month, marking a fresh chapter for Bangladesh’s T20I side.
Nahida takes over from Nigar Sultana, who stepped down after captaining Bangladesh in 82 T20I matches. Under her leadership, the team secured 32 victories, but disappointing performances in the Asia Cup and Asian Games preceded the change.
Mostary’s appointment as deputy adds batting experience to the new leadership group. She recently made headlines by scoring a historic ODI century against Australia.
Nahida brings extensive international experience, having made her Bangladesh debut in September 2015. She is currently the country’s leading wicket-taker in women’s T20Is, with 132 wickets at an average of 17.38 and best figures of 5 for 8.
She has also claimed 81 wickets in women’s ODIs, highlighting her value to Bangladesh across both white-ball formats.
