Islamabad: Women in Islamabad held an awareness session on Sunday to highlight the importance of carefully reading the Nikahnama, or marriage contract, before signing it.

The gathering was organised by members of a cycling group who travelled to F-9 Park to discuss the legal rights and responsibilities associated with marriage. Two lawyers were also present and briefed the participants about the legal aspects of the Nikahnama.

The women stressed that the Nikahnama is not merely a piece of paper but a legal document that can protect the rights of both spouses after marriage. They urged women, particularly young brides, to read every clause carefully and understand the conditions before putting their signatures on the document.

The discussion focused on several important issues that are often overlooked before marriage. These included the amount of haq mehr, the rights of the wife, her freedom within the marriage, and any conditions or restrictions agreed upon by the couple.

The participants described the Nikahnama as a form of social and legal contract between two individuals. They said both the bride and groom should read and understand its contents instead of signing it without knowing what they are agreeing to.

The lawyers explained that the terms included in the Nikahnama can have significant legal implications. Therefore, couples should discuss the conditions openly and seek legal advice if they do not understand any clause.

The awareness gathering was held against the backdrop of growing concern over incidents of sexual and gender-based violence. The participants said greater awareness of legal rights could help women make informed decisions and protect themselves from potential problems in married life.

Several young women attending the session appeared emotional but determined while sharing their views. They emphasised that women should be aware of their rights before entering into marriage and should not hesitate to ask questions about the Nikahnama.

The participants said families should also encourage brides and grooms to understand the marriage contract instead of treating it as a routine formality.

They stressed that a signature on the Nikahnama carries legal consequences, making it important for both parties to read, understand and agree to its conditions before signing.
