KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has said there is currently no majority in favour of creating new provinces in the country, reiterating that the issue lacks sufficient political support.
Speaking to the media on the occasion of the inauguration of a modern landfill site at Jam Chakro, the chief minister also commented on the imposition of governor’s rule in a province, the country’s security situation and the Mir Raza case.
Murad Ali Shah said governor’s rule was constitutional but not democratic. He added that no one wanted to remove an elected provincial government.
Referring to the country’s security challenges, the chief minister said terrorism was currently the biggest problem facing Pakistan. He questioned the situation in which the country was dealing with terrorism while provincial governments were allegedly refusing to cooperate with counterterrorism efforts.
The chief minister’s remarks came amid an ongoing debate over provincial governance and the possibility of creating additional provinces. He maintained that there was no majority at present to support the creation of new administrative units.
Earlier, while inaugurating the modern landfill site at Jam Chakro, Murad Ali Shah said the project was part of the provincial government’s efforts to improve cleanliness and waste management in Karachi.
He said five modern landfill cells were being constructed at the site, with work expected to be completed by December. The facility would enable the city’s waste to be disposed of in a scientific and organised manner.
According to the chief minister, the modern waste management system would help address environmental problems and reduce the unpleasant odour caused by improperly managed garbage.
He added that the government also planned to establish internationally standardised waste disposal points in other districts of Karachi to improve the city’s overall sanitation system.
The initiative aims to improve the handling and disposal of the large volumes of waste generated by the metropolitan city while reducing the environmental impact of conventional dumping practices.
Responding to a question about the Mir Raza case, Murad Ali Shah said the provincial cabinet had directed the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the matter.
He said the cabinet would now open the sealed report submitted by the commission and decide on the next course of action after reviewing its findings.
