Pakistan and Malaysia have signed an agreement for the transfer of convicted prisoners between the two countries, marking a new step toward strengthening bilateral cooperation in legal, security and law-enforcement matters.
The agreement was signed during a ceremony held at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad. Malaysian Interior Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Pakistan’s Federal Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi signed the agreement on behalf of their respective countries.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the signing ceremony and also held a meeting with the Malaysian interior minister. During the meeting, the prime minister welcomed the Malaysian delegation and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to further strengthening the close and brotherly relationship between the two countries.
According to the official statement, the two sides discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation across several areas particularly security, law enforcement, trade and investment.
The transfer of convicted prisoners agreement is expected to provide a formal framework for eligible prisoners serving sentences in one country to potentially be transferred to their home country subject to the applicable legal procedures and conditions of the agreement.
During the meeting, the two officials also discussed the regional situation and matters of mutual interest. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appreciated Malaysia’s support for Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
The Malaysian interior minister conveyed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s good wishes to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He also expressed Malaysia’s strong interest in further strengthening its bilateral relations and cooperation with Pakistan.
The meeting and signing ceremony were attended by senior Pakistani officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Tariq Fatemi.
The agreement comes as Pakistan and Malaysia seek to expand cooperation beyond traditional diplomatic relations. Enhanced coordination between law-enforcement authorities could provide both countries with a more structured mechanism for addressing issues involving Pakistani and Malaysian nationals serving prison sentences abroad.
The two countries have maintained close relations and regularly engage on political, economic and security matters. Officials from both sides have emphasized the importance of expanding practical cooperation in areas that directly affect their citizens.
The prisoner transfer agreement is therefore expected to add another dimension to Pakistan-Malaysia bilateral cooperation while supporting greater coordination between the relevant authorities of both countries.
The signing also reflects the two governments’ broader commitment to strengthening institutional cooperation and addressing shared legal and security concerns through formal bilateral mechanisms.
