Iranian Consul General in Lahore, Mehran Movahedfar, said Pakistan played a historic and commendable role in helping bring an end to the recent conflict, a contribution that has been appreciated by Iran and the international community alike.
Addressing students at the University of South Asia on the topic “The Development of West Asia and Pakistan’s Role in Regional Peace,” Mohadfar praised Pakistani leadership, including Shehbaz Sharif, Ishaq Dar and Syed Asim Munir, for their constructive efforts in achieving a ceasefire.
He said Pakistan had assumed a historic responsibility in working toward ending the conflict and congratulated both the Pakistani government and people for their significant role.
The Iranian diplomat emphasized that lasting regional security can only be achieved through cooperation among regional countries without external interference. According to him, sustainable security architecture in West Asia cannot become a reality without a fair and just resolution of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and the Palestinian issue.
Movahedfar also criticized what he described as unilateral and unjust sanctions imposed on Iran, saying that countries imposing sanctions should not use human rights as a pretext while targeting nations economically and politically.
Referring to the conflicts involving Iran, Israel and the United States, he reiterated Iran’s position that it has long advocated for a nuclear weapons-free Middle East. He stated that Iran has supported this idea since 1974 and maintains that, under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, it possesses an inherent right to pursue peaceful uranium enrichment without requiring approval from other countries.
The Iranian Consul General also condemned missile attacks on schools in Minab that reportedly resulted in the deaths of 168 students, describing the incident as a horrific crime. He further recalled the tragedy of the 2014 Peshawar school massacre, in which 149 schoolchildren lost their lives on December 16, 2014.
Highlighting the destruction caused by the conflict, Movahedfar said at least 30 hospitals, museums, 30 universities, 1,200 schools, 55 libraries and 149 historical buildings had been damaged or destroyed.
