Pakistan U19 team mistaken for asylum seekers in England

PORTSMOUTH: Pakistan’s Under-19 cricket team found itself at the centre of an unexpected and uncomfortable incident in England after a group of people mistakenly assumed the young cricketers were asylum seekers arriving at a hotel.

The incident took place in the British city of Portsmouth, where around 40 members of the Pakistan Under-19 squad arrived at the Marriott Hotel. According to reports, some people outside the hotel apparently mistook the visiting players and team officials for a group of asylum seekers and began protesting.

The situation briefly became tense as demonstrators gathered outside the hotel, apparently unaware that the people they were protesting against were an international youth cricket team visiting England for a series of matches.

Reform Party councillor George Maddock contacted the hotel after learning about the situation and spoke with the Pakistan Under-19 team’s coach to establish what was happening.

Maddock subsequently informed the protesters that the group was not made up of asylum seekers but consisted of members of Pakistan’s Under-19 cricket team. The clarification quickly changed the situation, with the protesters dispersing within minutes.

The councillor later described the episode as an extremely unfortunate misunderstanding.

The incident has also prompted cricket authorities to take a closer look at the team’s arrangements. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has contacted Pakistan’s cricket authorities following the incident, while security arrangements for the visiting squad are reportedly being reviewed.

The Pakistan Under-19 side is currently in England as part of its youth cricket commitments. The team played a four-day match against England Under-19 from September 2 to 5, suffering a narrow 10-run defeat.

Pakistan, however, responded strongly in the youth ODI format. In the match played on September 9, the visitors produced a dominant performance to beat England Under-19 by 177 runs.

While the incident outside the hotel was unrelated to cricket itself, it has attracted attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the visiting team.

For the young Pakistani players, what was expected to be an ordinary hotel arrival turned into an unexpected confrontation before the misunderstanding was quickly cleared up.

With further cricket activities ahead, officials are now expected to ensure that the team’s security and accommodation arrangements remain smooth for the remainder of its England tour.
