Pakistan’s wheat production misses target, onion, potato output increase

The nation fell short of its wheat production target for the Rabi Season 2023-2024, with an estimated yield of 29.69 million tons compared to the set goal of 32.2 million tons from 9.6 million hectares of land.

According to reports from provincial governments presented at the Federal Committee on Agriculture (FCA) meeting chaired by Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain, Punjab is expected to contribute 22.6 million tons of wheat, followed by Sindh with 4.4 million tons, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 1.4 million tons, and Balochistan with 1.3 million tons.

Despite missing the target, wheat production showed a 5.4% increase over the previous year.

Other crops like onions, tomatoes, and potatoes also saw production increases, while targets for cotton, rice, sugarcane, and maize were set for the upcoming Kharif season.

Water availability and precipitation forecasts were also discussed in the meeting, attended by various stakeholders from agriculture and related sectors.
