PCB may hire separate coaches for Test, ODI teams

The suggestion of having separate coaches for the red and white ball teams for the Pakistani cricket team has been proposed. According to Express News, discussions about appointing either Shaheen Afridi or Babar Azam as the captain continued late into the night, with a final decision expected today.

PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi held a three-hour consultation with selectors Mohammad Yousuf, Wahab Riaz, Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq, Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, and Director International Salman Wahla on key issues. Alongside the captaincy, the matter of coaching staff was also deliberated, including the proposal of having distinct coaches for the Test, ODI, and T20 teams.

To enhance the Test team’s performance, there were discussions about formulating a separate player list and coaching staff for this format. It was unanimously agreed to engage local coaches alongside foreign counterparts to address potential criticism regarding the absence of Pakistani coaches.

Former cricketers stressed the importance of offering substantial remuneration and incentives to Pakistani coaches, aligning them with their foreign counterparts. Reports suggest that PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi largely supports this stance.

The second major issue discussed was regarding the national team’s captaincy, evaluating the feasibility of replacing Shaheen Shah Afridi at this juncture and the potential ramifications. If Babar Azam is reinstated as captain, considerations were made regarding its impact on team performance and unity.

Regarding the captaincy, Mohsin Naqvi is expected to make a final decision, taking all factors into account.

Sources indicate that Salman Naseer and Usman Wahla held a separate meeting to finalize ongoing discussions with coaches, indicating progress in the decision-making process.
