PHEC, PU start campaign against religious hatred

The Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC), in partnership with Punjab University, has initiated a campaign to combat religious hatred. This campaign aims to educate young people about blasphemy laws and their responsibilities in society.

A seminar on “Blasphemy Law and Our Social Responsibilities” was held at the auditorium of Punjab University’s Sheikh Zayed Islamic Center. It was organized by the university’s Directorate of Students Affairs, the Committee for Awareness Against Religious Hatred, and PHEC.

The event was attended by former Federal Minister for Religious Affairs Aneeq Ahmed, Punjab University Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood, President of the Lahore High Court Bar Association Asad Manzoor Butt, and other notable figures. Faculty members and many students were also present.

Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood emphasized the role of teachers and universities in educating society. He stated that without public awareness of the laws, it is impossible to overcome ignorance. He also pointed out that avoiding misinformation is key and that social media experts need to be prepared to fight against false information.

He praised the PHEC’s campaign against religious hatred and highlighted the importance of working together to build a society that can resist anti-Muslim conspiracies. Aneeq Ahmed noted that each era has its own “devils” and that knowledge is the only way to recognize them. He added that blasphemy, disguised as freedom of expression, is unacceptable.

Ahmed stressed that understanding the distinction between criticism, contempt, and blasphemy is crucial. He mentioned that incidents like those in Jaranwala and Sialkot could be prevented if people were aware of the laws. He also noted that scholars in Jaranwala opened mosque doors to Christians, exemplifying religious harmony.

Asad Manzoor Butt pointed out that blasphemy laws are often misused in Pakistan, leading to international criticism. He highlighted that Pakistan has specific laws (295A, B, and C) to handle blasphemy cases, and people should report blasphemous acts to the authorities. He warned about the dangers of misusing digital devices.

Dr. Tanveer Qasim explained that Islam has comprehensive laws for all of humanity but lamented that some anti-Islamic elements spread offensive content through social media. He mentioned that various Pakistani institutions would work together to raise awareness and prevent the misuse of social media.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Hammad Lakhvi spoke about the growing divisions in society that fuel religious hatred and extremism. He underscored the importance of training to reduce religious hatred and encourage healthy disagreements. Dr. Muhammad Ali Kalasra said that Punjab University would contribute to reducing extremism.

Finally, the event included a tree planting campaign at the Sheikh Zayed Islamic Center, supported by the Aghaz-e-Sahar Green Community, symbolizing the hope for a greener and more tolerant future.
