PML-N unveils 100-day reform plan for AJK

PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif have called for urgent measures to address the problems facing the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The PML-N leadership made the remarks during a meeting with newly elected AJK Prime Minister Iftikhar Gilani and Legislative Assembly Speaker Tariq Farooq on Sunday.

According to the party, the meeting focused on key public sectors, including healthcare, education, sanitation and infrastructure. The leadership stressed that immediate steps were needed to improve basic services and living conditions across the region.

Nawaz Sharif also shared a 100-day reform plan with AJK Prime Minister Gilani. The proposed programme aims to accelerate development and modernise the public sector by introducing reforms in several key areas.

The PML-N said the leadership had directed the AJK government to put the region on a path of modernisation and development, following what it described as the development model adopted in Punjab.

Gilani and Speaker Farooq expressed gratitude to the PML-N leadership for supporting and placing confidence in them. Nawaz Sharif, Shehbaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz also congratulated the newly elected AJK leaders and wished them success in their respective responsibilities.

Gilani took oath as the 17th prime minister of AJK on Friday after emerging as the PML-N-backed candidate following the 2026 general elections. PPP leader Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin was subsequently appointed leader of the opposition.

In his first address after taking office, Gilani identified employment and livelihood opportunities as major priorities for his administration. He also promised reforms in education and healthcare, along with plans to digitalise the regional economy and expand internet access.

The new government took charge after the completion of the AJK electoral process, which was conducted in phases because of security and weather-related challenges.

Forty-six newly elected members of the AJK Legislative Assembly took oath on August 24, formally beginning the new parliamentary term. The PML-N emerged as the leading parliamentary force in the elections.

Polling was conducted in different divisions under a revised schedule. Voting in some constituencies was delayed because of security concerns, while severe rainfall and landslides also disrupted polling in two Muzaffarabad constituencies.
