The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is moving closer to its 12th edition, with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) finalising key decisions on player retentions, auction rules, franchise budgets and squad structures during a special operations workshop.
Representatives of all franchises attended the workshop and unanimously agreed on the proposed retention regulations, player auction conditions and squad-size framework, setting the stage for the next phase of preparations.
According to the PCB, January 13 has been set as the deadline for player retentions. The date was selected while keeping the National T20 Cup schedule in mind, allowing local cricketers an opportunity to impress franchises through their performances in the domestic competition.
Under the agreed retention policy, each franchise will be allowed to retain a maximum of seven players. However, teams choosing to retain all seven players must release their most expensive player from the previous auction.
The PCB has also established a salary cap of Rs450 million, equivalent to approximately $1.6 million, for each franchise.
However, franchises opting for direct signings, retaining their previous season’s direct signing, or doing both will receive an increased salary cap of Rs505 million.
Another important condition requires every franchise to spend at least Rs365 million during the player auction, ensuring a minimum level of investment in squad building.
Meanwhile, the direct signing window will remain open until November 23. Under the new arrangements, franchises will only be permitted to directly sign overseas players who did not participate in either of the previous two PSL seasons.
The auction regulations were reviewed by all participating franchises before receiving unanimous approval, reflecting a collective effort to establish a transparent and agreed framework for the upcoming season.
PSL Chief Executive Officer Salman Naseer described the workshop as an important milestone, highlighting not only the decisions reached but also the spirit of cooperation among the franchises.
He said the open discussions and complete transparency demonstrated by all stakeholders made the meeting particularly significant.
With the major operational framework now finalised, franchises can begin planning their squads, evaluating domestic talent and identifying overseas players ahead of PSL 12.
The latest decisions are expected to make the upcoming player auction an important stage in determining how teams strengthen their combinations and compete for the next PSL title.
