LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has directed authorities across the province to implement comprehensive security, facilitation, and emergency response measures ahead of Muharram, emphasizing the need for vigilance amid heightened regional tensions and increased religious sensitivities.
Chairing a high-level meeting on Muharram preparations, the chief minister reviewed security arrangements and praised the coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies, intelligence departments, district administrations, and other relevant institutions. She stressed that maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of mourners must remain the government’s top priority.
Maryam Nawaz instructed officials to strengthen surveillance in sensitive locations, particularly in areas identified as vulnerable. She ordered the use of modern technology, including CCTV monitoring and security mapping, to closely observe processions and gatherings. Additional personnel will be deployed wherever required to enhance protection.
Highlighting the importance of proactive security measures, the chief minister directed police and field officers to remain alert and identify suspicious activities promptly. She emphasized the continuation of search and combing operations and called for real-time intelligence sharing among agencies to prevent any security threats.
The chief minister noted that all religious gatherings have been registered and that religious leaders are cooperating with authorities to promote peaceful observance of Muharram. She urged clerics to encourage harmony and discourage any actions that could disturb public order.
To improve emergency response capabilities, Maryam Nawaz ordered the expansion of the Safe City surveillance system, including the integration of private CCTV networks in areas lacking official camera coverage. She also praised the introduction of QR-coded panic buttons linked to emergency services, directing officials to ensure their widespread use during Muharram events.
Addressing concerns over extreme weather conditions, the chief minister instructed district administrations to provide cold drinking water along procession routes and ensure adequate arrangements to protect participants from the ongoing heatwave. Rescue teams, mobile clinics, and field hospitals will also be stationed at key locations to provide immediate medical assistance if required.
She further ordered the removal of construction materials, debris, uncovered manholes, and other hazards from procession routes. Authorities were also directed to improve cleanliness, manage traffic effectively, and address issues such as stray animals and dangerous overhead electrical wiring.
Maryam Nawaz warned officials against mistreating mourners and stressed that citizens participating in religious activities should be treated with dignity and respect. She called for prompt resolution of public complaints and urged officials to adopt a people-friendly approach throughout Muharram.
The chief minister also directed authorities to take strict action against hate material and individuals involved in spreading sectarian tensions. Public awareness campaigns will continue throughout the month to promote unity, peace, and responsible conduct.
Concluding the meeting, Maryam Nawaz instructed all districts to establish fully functional control rooms and conduct emergency drills in the coming days to test preparedness. She emphasized that a proactive strategy and effective coordination among departments are essential to ensuring a peaceful and secure Muharram across Punjab.
