Punjab govt to start School Meal Program with WFP

The Government of Punjab has agreed to collaborate with the World Food Program (WFP) to implement a School Meal Program aimed at addressing malnutrition among children.

Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb met with the Country Director of the WFP in Lahore to discuss the initiative. During the meeting, Aurangzeb said that establishing a Nutrition Force is a top priority for the Punjab Chief Minister. She stated that the WFP has agreed to commence a program targeting the eradication of malnutrition among children in Punjab.

Aurangzeb also highlighted efforts to equip farmers with modern agricultural machinery and IT tools. Bilateral cooperation on issues such as population control, health, sanitation, and education was also discussed with the WFP country director.

Addressing the prevalent issue of malnutrition in Punjab, Aurangzeb noted that despite being an agricultural hub, a significant portion of mothers and children suffer from malnutrition. She stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between donors and partners to address this issue effectively.

Furthermore, Aurangzeb mentioned plans to launch the Solid Waste Management Program, starting with 16 major cities. Additionally, the implementation of an action plan to tackle environmental challenges and smog is set to commence the following week.

The Country Director of the WFP assured support for research and development initiatives aimed at combating malnutrition. Moreover, Aurangzeb received assurances of full support from the WFP in various areas, including aquaculture farming, carbon financing, maternal and child health, climate change, and capacity building for farmers.
