Punjab to distribute over 150,000 e-bikes to students

LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced a major expansion of its student e-bike initiative, with more than 150,000 electric bikes planned for students across the province.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired a high-level meeting on Tuesday and directed officials to make the scheme more affordable and accessible for students and their families.

Under the revised plan, students will not be required to make any down payment when receiving an e-bike. The chief minister also rejected proposals to impose additional charges beyond the agreed monthly installments.

The Punjab government will bear the interest and insurance costs associated with the bikes. The move is aimed at reducing the overall financial burden on students and ensuring that the scheme remains affordable.

Officials agreed on a proposal to keep the monthly installment at around Rs3,000, making the electric bikes more accessible to students who depend on public transport or face high daily commuting expenses.

Maryam Nawaz also directed authorities to launch the official e-bike registration portal during the current week. Students will be able to access registration and eligibility information through the portal once it becomes operational.

During the meeting, officials briefed the chief minister about the objectives of the initiative. The program is designed to provide students with reliable and affordable transportation while promoting the use of environmentally friendly vehicles.

The government believes that greater access to electric bikes can help students reduce their daily travel expenses and dependence on conventional fuel-powered transport. The initiative is also expected to contribute to efforts aimed at reducing fuel consumption and air pollution.

The latest phase represents a significant expansion of Punjab’s student mobility program, with the target exceeding 150,000 e-bikes.

The chief minister stressed that students should not face unnecessary financial pressure while benefiting from the scheme. She directed the relevant departments to ensure transparency and make the registration process simple and accessible.
