Relief from high fuel prices is needed

The talks between the federal government and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) on petroleum product prices should result in price cut. At a time when the cost of living is already putting pressure on ordinary families, every serious effort to reduce the burden on the public deserves attention. A JI delegation, led by Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch, has been holding talks with the government in Islamabad. The government team is led by Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal and includes Adviser to the Prime Minister Rana Sanaullah, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Bilal Azhar Kayani. JI has presented proposals for reducing petroleum prices and providing relief to consumers. The party had also submitted its recommendations during an earlier meeting on September 7. The latest round of talks is focused on the government’s response to these proposals. JI deserves appreciation for raising an issue that directly affects the daily lives of millions of Pakistanis. Petroleum prices are not only about the cost of filling a vehicle. They affect transport fares, food prices, electricity costs, business expenses and the prices of many other essential goods.

When fuel becomes expensive, the impact is quickly felt by ordinary people. A worker who travels to work, a student who uses public transport, a farmer who needs fuel for machinery and a shopkeeper who pays for transportation all face higher costs. Political parties have a responsibility to raise such issues before the government, particularly when they affect the wider population. JI’s decision to take the matter to the negotiating table is therefore a positive example of pro-people politics. Dialogue is more useful when it produces practical solutions for citizens. The government should seriously consider JI’s proposals. If there is room within the national budget and economic situation, petroleum prices should be reduced to provide relief to consumers. At the same time, any reduction should be sustainable and should not create a new financial problem for the country. The government should examine taxes, levies and other costs included in petroleum prices and identify possible areas for relief.
