Ronaldo demands lifetime ban over Diogo Jota chants

Cristiano Ronaldo has called for a lifetime stadium ban for fans who allegedly taunted Al Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves by chanting the name of his late friend and former teammate, Diogo Jota, during a Saudi Pro League match.

The incident reportedly took place on Saturday during the match between Al Taawoun and Al Hilal in Buraidah. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show supporters chanting “Jota” in what was perceived as a provocative reference to the Portuguese footballer’s tragic death.

Neves, who was visibly affected by the chants, reportedly responded by pointing toward his eye before looking up at the sky.

The incident quickly sparked outrage, with Ronaldo publicly condemning the behaviour and urging football authorities to take strong action against those involved.

Reacting to a video of the incident on social media, Ronaldo said the league should act against such conduct, stressing that football has limits that must not be crossed.

He reportedly called for the supporters responsible to be banned from stadiums for life, describing the incident as something that goes beyond the spirit of the sport.

“Football is not this,” Ronaldo’s reaction suggested, reinforcing his belief that personal grief should never be used as a tool for provocation during a match.

Who Was Diogo Jota?

Diogo Jota, a former Portugal international and Liverpool forward, died in a car accident in Spain on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother, André Silva.

His death sent shockwaves through the football world, with teammates, friends and supporters mourning the loss of one of Portugal’s most respected footballers.

Ruben Neves was among Jota’s close friends and was one of the pallbearers at his funeral, highlighting the personal connection between the two players.

The alleged chants therefore attracted particular criticism, given Neves’ close relationship with Jota and the circumstances surrounding the latter’s death.

Authorities Promise Action

Al Hilal has reportedly filed an official complaint with the Saudi Football Federation over the incident. Al Taawoun, the Saudi Pro League and the Saudi Football Federation have also condemned the alleged offensive chants.

Authorities said the individuals responsible had been identified and would face action in accordance with applicable regulations.

The controversy has once again raised questions about fan conduct in football stadiums and the responsibility of clubs and leagues to prevent abusive or deeply insensitive behaviour.

As disciplinary proceedings move forward, Ronaldo’s comments have added significant pressure on Saudi football authorities to ensure that respect and sportsmanship remain central to the game.
