Russia says Iran’s position closer to reality as US ‘exaggerates’ situation

Russia has stepped into the growing diplomatic debate between Iran and the United States, with a senior Russian diplomat claiming that Tehran’s position is “closer to reality” while accusing Washington of exaggerating developments in ongoing negotiations.

The remarks were made by Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Geneva, who is known for his outspoken commentary on global affairs via social media platform X.

Speaking about the current state of negotiations between Iran and the United States, Ulyanov said Iran’s assessment of the situation appeared to be more aligned with reality, while suggesting that Washington was portraying the progress in a more optimistic — and possibly misleading — manner.

“Iran’s diagnosis of the situation seems closer to reality,” he noted, indirectly criticizing the tone and messaging coming from US officials involved in the talks.

His comments come at a time when diplomatic discussions between the two long-standing rivals remain tense and fragile, with both sides continuing to disagree on key issues such as a potential ceasefire framework, regional security arrangements, and Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile.

The issue of enriched uranium remains one of the most sensitive points in the negotiations, with Western countries expressing concern over its storage and possible relocation, while Iran insists on its right to peaceful nuclear development under international law.

Ulyanov also questioned the responsibility of US messaging, suggesting that Washington’s public statements on progress in the talks may not fully reflect the complexities on the ground.

Analysts say Russia’s remarks highlight its continued effort to position itself as a key diplomatic player in Middle Eastern affairs, particularly in nuclear negotiations involving Iran.

The latest statement is expected to add further friction to already strained relations between the negotiating sides, as international pressure grows to prevent further escalation in the region.
