Shall We Dance is a 2004 Hollywood film starring Richard Gere (John Clark), Jennifer Lopez (Paulina) and Susan Sarandon (Beverly Clark). With a runtime of 1 hour and 46 minutes, it falls into the genre of a musical romcom. The director, Peter Chelsom, did a fantastic job with the execution of the film.
The film revolves around ballroom dancing. Three men, Chic, John, and Vern, take admission in Miss Mitzis dance school. As they start their dance lessons, the lessons turn into more than just dance-they lead to infidelity. John takes the lessons secretly. He doesn’t confide in his wife, and as the beans spill, the question that arises is- will John have the courage to tell his wife about why he lied to her all this time and patch things up with her, or will he continue to cheat on her and take the wrong decision?
The film beautifully captures the spirit of dance. Men and women dancing together sparks excitement and sometimes leads to cheating on their partner or spouse.
The scene where Paulina and John dance away before the final competition strikes the audience as a moment of striking chemistry between the two. Paulina is alluring, and John is infatuated with her. I say infatuation because, in the end, he finally clears all misunderstandings and asks his wife to dance with him. But will his wife forgive him and give him another chance?
Is Paulina ready to move on? Despite the fact that she has feelings for John will she realise the relationship cannot work and take a decision that will allow her to move on?
As the song Sway plays, it steals the heart of the audience as they move along with the beat. The soundtrack is appealing, and Sway definitely is the best song from the film.
The film makes the viewer want to learn how to dance  with an energy, charm and suavity that the film depicts in its dances.
