The United States has recently issued a stern warning to Indian citizens about illegal immigration, emphasizing that violation of US immigration laws has major criminal punishments as the American government tightens its noose over illegal entry and over-stays.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the US Embassy in India stated that the prevention of illegal immigration remains one of the highest priorities for the Biden government. The statement was released on the platform X as the US Embassy wrote that those defying the US laws will have severe criminal punishment.
This warning comes as part of a series of stricter immigration policies that have occurred since the presidency of Donald Trump, who took power in January of this year. Enforcement of the stricter policies occurred throughout the year of 2025.
According to reports by the US State Department, over 80,000 non-immigrant visas have been revoked since January of this year. This was attributed to offenses that included drunk-driving offenses, violence crimes, theft, and violating visa rules. In the month of August, over 6,000 student visas were revoked.
Worth mentioning is that such warnings have yet to be issued to people from other nations such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, and China, among others.
The alert occurs amid apparent strain between US-India relations. A flare-up of tensions occurred over a 50% tariff imposed on certain Indian goods as well as recent US diplomatic efforts with Pakistan following increased tensions between India-Pakistan earlier in May.
Enforcement efforts have included high-profile deportations. In February, 104 Indian citizens were deported to Amritsar via a US military flight—presumably the first time a military flight has been used for this purpose—itself illustrative of the toughness of the immigration policy of the administration.
Moreover, the USA has strengthened its visa policy. President Trump, in September, directed the government to increase the cost of H-1B visas, which the Indian government expressed worries about, as the Indian IT industry, relying on skilled visas, opposed such a move sternly.
But US officials stress that the policy is only meant to enforce immigation laws and not specifically directed at any particular country. However, experts feel that the latest warning clearly indicates the tough approach being adopted by the US on the issue of illegal immigation. The embassy clarified that in order to either travel to or remain in the United States, an individual must abide by the laws of the US.
