Tensions between the United States and Iran have escalated once again after American forces carried out a new round of airstrikes against multiple targets inside Iran, following what Washington described as an Iranian drone attack on a commercial oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation was launched in response to an attack on a Panama-flagged tanker transiting one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes. The vessel was reportedly carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil when it was struck by a drone. American officials described the incident as a violation of a recently agreed ceasefire and a threat to international maritime security.
CENTCOM said US military aircraft targeted a range of military assets, including surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air-defense sites, drone storage facilities and capabilities linked to mine-laying operations. The command stated that the strikes were carried out under orders from President Donald Trump and were intended as a direct response to what it called continued Iranian aggression against commercial shipping.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported explosions in southern parts of the country, including the areas of Sirik and Qeshm. Reports indicated that a telecommunications facility may have been hit, although Iranian authorities had not released a detailed assessment of the damage at the time of reporting.
The latest strikes came only hours after another round of military action between the two rivals, raising fears that the fragile truce reached earlier this month could be unraveling. Both Washington and Tehran have accused each other of violating the agreement, while regional security concerns continue to grow.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical artery for global energy supplies, and any disruption in the waterway has immediate implications for international oil markets and maritime trade. Analysts warn that continued military exchanges could increase uncertainty across the Gulf region and place additional pressure on diplomatic efforts aimed at preventing a broader conflict.
As the situation develops, governments across the region are closely monitoring events, while commercial shipping operators remain on high alert amid concerns that further escalation could threaten one of the world’s most important energy corridors.
