US Refrains from Backing Pakistan-Iran Gas Pipeline

The US restated its opposition on Tuesday to the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project, cautioning about the possibility of sanctions for involvement in business dealings with Tehran. Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister, Musadik Malik, had previously indicated Islamabad’s intention to seek waivers from US sanctions concerning the pipeline. Despite being a longstanding collaboration between Tehran and Islamabad, the gas pipeline project has encountered numerous delays and financial challenges. A spokesperson from the US State Department affirmed inherent risks of conducting business with Iran and urged careful consideration of these consequences. The spokesperson restated the US’s stance against the pipeline’s progression, citing recent statements by Donald Lu, the State Department’s principal official for South and Central Asia, made to a congressional panel
