Waiting for flood aid

The flooding from the previous year left Pakistan in ruins, and now a devastating rainy spell has destroyed the standing wheat harvest in Punjab. The crop has been flattened by the rains and hailstorms, stealing farmers’ hopes at the last minute and causing problems for the next crop. The government may not be able to aid the farmers due to its lack of funds. Devastating floods brought on by last year’s severe rains as a result of global climate change struck roughly one-third of Pakistan, contributing significantly to the nation’s present economic crisis. Julie Kozak, director of communication at the IMF, has recognised this fact in a statement. According to the most recent sources, the donor meeting was conducted in Geneva two and a half months ago, but fulfilment of pledges has been put off, much as the IMF’s installment for the rehabilitation of the flood victims. In addition to 3.3 million people losing their houses and standing crops on millions of acres, the flood resulted in numerous fatalities. $16 billion in damages resulted from extensive infrastructure disruption, which included road destruction. In order to examine the devastation brought on by the floods, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres travelled to Pakistan in September of last year. He then successfully rallied the international community for the rehabilitation of the flood victims.

The second week of January saw the holding of an international conference on a climate resilient Pakistan, whose attendees contributed half of the $16 billion in damages. According to the report, Pakistan is experiencing delays in carrying out the agreements reached in Geneva for the flood victims. Apart from the aid supplies, it has only gotten $12.5 million so far in the current fiscal year, compared to the $1.5 billion predicted, and just $300 million more is anticipated by June 30. Given their feeling of duty, the Donors Conference promises must immediately put their guarantees into action.
