Diabetes specialists say that weight-loss injections are not only effective for treating obesity but may also help lean patients with diabetes achieve better blood sugar control. However, they stress that these medications should only be used under the supervision of a qualified medical specialist.
According to diabetes experts, medications such as Mounjaro, Wegovy and Ozempic mimic natural hormones in the body that help reduce appetite, improve insulin release and regulate blood sugar levels. The experts said these treatments can offer several benefits including:
- Weight loss
- Improved long-term blood sugar control
- Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease
- Reduced dependence on insulin in some patients
If treatment continues without major complications, patients may experience significant weight loss over approximately 88 weeks. Medical specialists explained that many people develop diabetes despite having a low body weight because they have high levels of internal (visceral) fat.
As a result, some lean patients particularly those with fatty liver disease, poorly controlled blood sugar or intolerance to certain diabetes medications may also benefit from these injections. Doctors emphasized that before prescribing these medications, they carefully evaluate the patient’s:
- Age
- Height and weight
- Other medical conditions
- Severity of diabetes
According to medical experts, the treatment may also cause side effects including:
- Excessive weight loss
- Muscle weakness or loss of muscle mass
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Bloating
- Diarrhea
For this reason, patients are advised to consume adequate protein and perform strength-training exercises while using these medications to help preserve muscle mass. Research reports suggest that in some patients, 26% to 45% of the total weight lost may come from muscle rather than body fat making muscle preservation an important part of treatment.
Doctors also warned that although uncommon, some people may develop gallbladder disease, pancreatitis or dehydration which require prompt medical attention. They further advised that these injections should not be used by:
- Individuals who are extremely underweight
- Patients with severe stomach or intestinal diseases
- People with certain hormone-related disorders
- Anyone whom a diabetes specialist determines is not a suitable candidate for the treatment
Medical experts strongly emphasized that weight-loss injections should never be self-prescribed or used without medical supervision. They should only be started after a comprehensive medical evaluation and on the advice of a qualified diabetes specialist.
