Britain takes bold step to eliminate smoking for future generations

LONDON: The United Kingdom has approved a landmark piece of legislation that will introduce a lifelong ban on cigarette purchases for future generations, marking one of the most significant public health reforms in decades.

Under the new Tobacco and Vapes Bill, individuals born on or after January 1, 2009, will never be legally allowed to buy cigarettes. The bill has now cleared both houses of Parliament and awaits royal assent to become law.

The legislation is designed to prevent young people currently aged 17 or younger from ever taking up smoking, effectively phasing out tobacco use over time.

Health minister Baroness Merron described the move as a historic milestone. “This is a landmark bill; it will create a smoke-free generation. It is the biggest public health intervention in a generation and will save lives,” she said during a session in the House of Lords.

The law will also grant the government expanded powers to regulate tobacco, vaping, and nicotine products, including restrictions on flavours, packaging, and marketing.

Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the UK, responsible for approximately 74,600 to 78,000 deaths annually. Officials believe the new measures will significantly reduce these numbers over time.

Currently, the legal age to purchase cigarettes and vaping products in the UK is 18, and smoking is still permitted in many public areas. The new legislation signals a major shift in policy, aiming to gradually eliminate smoking from society altogether.

Once implemented, the UK will become one of the first countries in the world to enforce a generational ban on smoking, setting a precedent for global public health strategies.
